Researchers believe that Salvador Dalí preferred to fall asleep in a sitting position, holding a heavy iron key or, according to other sources, placing a metal tray next to his bed and holding a spoon. When he fell asleep, his hand would relax, and the key or spoon would fall, awakening the artist. According to Dalí, this helped him find inspiration.
