#AllQuestionsAboutArt: The Style of Power in 10 Seconds
How can you read power in columns? Architecture is power frozen in stone. And the column is its most visible symbol: by its order, you can understand how power wanted to appear.
There are only five orders - five characters:
Doric – heavy, clear forms without unnecessary decoration. The power of strength, discipline, and military rigor.
Ionian – volutes, movement, and grace. The power of intellect, culture, and sophistication.
Corinthian – acanthus, pomp, and theatrical effect. The power of beauty, wealth, and ostentatious brilliance.
Tuscan style is simplicity, functionality, and minimal embellishment. It embraces order, practicality, and efficiency.
Composite—everything complex, spectacular, and luxurious all at once. The power of scale, prestige, and ostentatious might.
Look at the columns—and try to determine in a few seconds what image of power you see before you. What art question have you been Googling for ages but are too embarrassed to ask? Let us know in the comments—we'll discuss it in the next post.
